Author: wordancerblog

I am currently an ELA Curriculum Coordinator (JPK-5th grade) and have been an educator for 40 years. Over the years, I've worked with students in pre-school to 12th grade. The power of story, creativity, and curiosity have kept teaching and learning exciting and new. I'm always looking forward to the next chapter!

Kitchen Literacy: Luck of the Irish

March 17, 2022March 17, 2022 ~ wordancerblog ~ 11 Comments

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!  For years, I would bake Irish soda bread and read leprechaun stories with my young students.  There is nothing like the smell of fresh-baked bread while listening to fanciful tales.

Consider the Pomegranate

March 16, 2022March 16, 2022 ~ wordancerblog ~ 4 Comments

Then my mom introduced me to the pomegranate, which we called a Chinese apple back then.  Pomegranates were actually native to Iran and Northern India.  They were so exotic to me.

Nature’s Cure

March 15, 2022 ~ wordancerblog ~ Leave a comment

When the world becomes too much, I invariably turn to nature.  As I walk the trails, I am on the lookout for something to surprise me, something to capture my imagination.  Nature is the best cure for writer’s block.

Mugs and Memory

March 14, 2022 ~ wordancerblog ~ 16 Comments

They are nothing flashy, just some cups that caught my eye or were given to me. Their power is in the memories they hold: who gave them to me, why I gave them, where did they come from?

March Snow

March 13, 2022March 13, 2022 ~ wordancerblog ~ 6 Comments

I was hoping to escape spring snow this year. This year, I desperately need spring to come early.  I am through with gray, cold, and drudge.

What Girls are Made of – Part 2

March 12, 2022 ~ wordancerblog ~ 1 Comment

In each poem, I want to create a snapshot of childhood and how girls navigate in the world. I’m going to take time to think back on what was important to me back then.

What Little Girls are Made of

March 11, 2022 ~ wordancerblog ~ 7 Comments

When I walk down the corridors, I am greeted by a variety of girls, ages three to eleven. They wear colorful leggings, light-up sneakers, unicorn headbands, wild curls and long twisted braids. They come in all shapes, shades, and sizes. And they are the hope we need in this world, especially right now.

Writing to Entertain

March 10, 2022March 10, 2022 ~ wordancerblog ~ 3 Comments

It's Wednesday, time for Kindergarten writing workshop. I have a hop in my step as I walk down the hall towards the Kindergarten classroom. I open the door, and the teacher rushes over to tell me that she desperately needs my help.

Problem Solver

March 9, 2022 ~ wordancerblog ~ 2 Comments

Problem solver. That is who I am.  That is who I am at the core of my being, of my soul.  I’m not sure if that’s because I faced daunting problems in my childhood that I felt compelled to fix.

Fly Like a Bird

March 8, 2022March 7, 2022 ~ wordancerblog ~ 2 Comments

March is on the verge of bestowing full green upon the world.  I can hear it in the birds that perch above my feeder, bright flashes of blue and red, wonderful displays of white-tipped browns and grays.

Your love for birds shines bright and true. Do you have a favourite bird? If so, which one?
My city has an official bird, the Anna’s Hummingbird.

What an amazing book list! We have a pet parakeet, and we love watching all the birds outside. Looking forward to finding new bird books to love.
