Creating Calm: Mindful 8 Poems Inspired by Maine

Since I know August is the calm before the Back-to-School storm, I thought I’d select some of my favorite Maine photographs and write Mindful 8 poems to accompany them.  As I wrote them, I was struck by how peaceful I became.  I concentrated on nature and tried to distill the essence of its beauty with spare words.  This is becoming an important practice for me, and it also helps to alleviate writer’s block.

Journey to the Land of Wild Blueberries

I know Maine is renowned for its lobster, and I do enjoy that treat dipped in drawn butter.  I confess, I’d like almost anything if it was dipped in melted butter. But on this trip I focused on the blueberries.  Even though in late August the wild blueberries are gone,  I marveled at all the wild blueberries bushes that line the trails.  They seemed to grown everywhere.

Mindful Style

I have been traveling in southern Maine this past week. While photographing this beautiful landscape, I was struck by how the style of the homes, shops, and public spaces all keep a focus on nature. The seaside and its accompanying flora and fauna all become part of a peaceful natural decor. The colors: ocean blue, dune grass green, picket fence white, daisy yellow, azalea pink, and cardinal red are repeated in pleasing patterns so restful to the eye and spirit.
