Spring Break Artifacts

It is my last couple of days on spring break in Florida.  I’ve slept late, ate good food, written poems about food, and took long walks capturing the beauty I saw with my camera.  I am trying to do things that nourish me, that uplift me, that help to better understand my purpose. The sunshine and warm weather has definitely lifted my spirits, and I hope I have absorbed enough of its healing energy to bring back north to our muddy March season. Below, are five artifacts that I have discovered on spring break.  These images will sustain me as I return to work and my regular routine.

Flowers

Everything is in bloom.  Flowers of all species and colors decorate paths, homes, and parks.  I love how a simple plant can inspire.  I have found that beauty is so important to my mood.  Surrounding myself with beautiful things helps me keep a positive attitude.

Palm Trees

Palms stand tall against the ocean background.  They curve gracefully and their tussled tops sway in the breeze.  Some are laden with clusters of heavy coconuts.  They line main streets and add a regal flair.

Parrots

I hear unfamiliar squawking above.  I wonder what is making all that racket.  I look up to find three parrots sitting on a telephone wire.  I hope I can catch their magnificence.  I’m used to seeing sparrows, jays, and robins – but these red-masked parrots are a pleasant surprise.

Ocean

The Atlantic in Florida is NOT the Atlantic in New Jersey.  Now, I love the Jersey Shore.  I grew up swimming and boating in those dark green waters.  But the Florida Atlantic is deep turquoise blue.  It shines from afar and beckons me to sit close and take in the beach goers, surf gliders, and seagulls.

Nourishment

We had many good meals on our vacation.  While walking South Beach, I was attracted to the many place settings of the outdoor cafes.  I never really thought about how a place setting can influence a meal and entice you before the food comes.  A beautiful place setting is an invitation to sit, relax, and enjoy.

  1. As a person who does not get spring break until next week, I loved your sneak peek at vacation! Your photos are gorgeous, and show you must have had many, many refreshing experiences. I love the parrots! We had wild parrots where I grew up in Southern California, and I still love listening to and watching them when I return home to visit my family.

    Nourishment.

You are the masterful poet…what do you think? As a list, I could repeat it over and over. Take it with you as you return to bring light and love to your students. Lucky them, always.
